Believe it or not, those biscuits and burgers we all love are a leading cause of depression. This is particularly true if you happen to be a middle aged man whose primary source of nutrition is junk food. Where fruit and veg ward off the blue, junk-food has been scientifically proven to cause depression.
Junk Food is one of the leading causes of depression symptoms, claims new study
In a recent study, over 2000 men found that changing their diet from junk food to a healthy alternative lowered their risk of developing a mental illness. A large part of the reason is that being overweight increases the chance of developing depression. But that isn’t the whole story.
Anu Rausunen, a nutritionist at University of Eastern Finland, states, “A healthy diet doesn’t just cure depression but can prevent it too.”
The study revealed that the best diet for lowering the chances of depression includes whole grains, fruits, vegetable, fish, low fat cheese, berries and poultry. An increase in your intake of folate (which is found in the foods listed above) is particularly beneficial.
In another study, a group of 140 individuals with depression symptoms were put on the recommended diet. Not only did they lose weight but they showed a significant decrease in depression symptoms.

It has also been revealed that a junk food diet, full of foods like sausages, sugary drinks, snacks and processed meats, is a leading cause of depression. Perhaps this is why depression has been on the rise in recent years.
Interestingly, caffeine has been shown to not be relevant to depression.
So, if you’re suffering from depression and looking for a cure, your diet is a good place to start.
