These Twins, Born Different Colours, Prove We Are One

Nature is the best teacher. Where society can be wrong, nature is always right.

Nature always gives lessons for those who listen.

One such lesson came from the birth of two twins, Kalani and Jarani Dean.

Kalani (whose name means “From the heavens”) and Jarani Dean were born with different skin colours. Kalani, who is white, has inherited fair skin from her mother, and Jarani Dean has inherited brown skin from her father.

Different skin colour, same DNA. These twins prove that we are all one, regardless of the colour of our skin.

Their parents, Whitney Meyer and Tomas Dean, has been sharing pictures of their beautiful babies on social media, and the images have gone viral.

Nature is full of wonder and miracles, such as this beautiful twin birth. Geneticist Jim Wilson tells us that this birth is a true miracle. There is only a one in 500 chance of a mixed-race couple having babies of different skin colours.

So how did nature create this beautiful miracle?

Scientifically speaking, Kalani and Jarani are dizygotic, meaning they are derived from two separate ova and so are not identical twins.

Dizygotic twins receive different genes from their mother and father. Skin colour in itself is a natural wonder. There are myriad genes that influence both skin colour and eye colour and even the most advanced scientists cannot fully explain how eye colour and skin colour come about.

The wonder of skin colour and eye colour becomes more complex when we consider mixed race relationships. In this case, the genes that control skin colour can be distributed differently.

Mother Meyer told TODAY that she hopes her twins can be a symbol for harmony, helping to inspire the end of racism. To their mother and father, the baby twins are symbols of love.  And they are one. “They’re the same, just different colours,” says Meyer.

Father Dean was in awe when his eye first caught sight of his baby twins. “In a million years, I never thought I’d have a girl with blue eyes. I didn’t think I could pull that one off!” he said.

Nature is always the most wise and beautiful teacher. We are one. Little Kalani and Jarani Dean prove it.
