When American industrialist Henry Ford said, “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right” he really did hit the nail on the head. As his inspiring quote implies, the best way how to be self empowered is to believe in yourself. But it’s not that easy for many people.
Some psychologists believe that there are only two perspectives that people have on life. One perspective has the individual as the victim, the other as an owner.
Victims are far more commonplace. These individuals believe that they are at the mercy of external factors. Perhaps they believe, for instance, that their career is at the mercy of their boss. This belief is highly demotivational. They don’t believe they’re in control of their own worlds so why even bother trying? The victim is the opposite of personal empowerment. If you want to become self empowered, then you nee to make sure you stay away from this mentality.
At the opposite end of the spectrum are the owners, who are self reliant, confident and, above all else, believe that they are in control of their own destinies. These people are self empowered. To become self empowered, you need to aim to adopt this mentality of self control, the belief that you are master of your own destiny.
You may find that you are part owner and part victim. Perhaps you feel like the owner in your relationships but he victim in your career, or vice versa. But it is best to be the owner in all areas of your life.
How To Become Self Empowered by Checking Your Mentality
Ask yourself, do I feel like the owner or the victim? What do you believe is in control of your life? Are you at the mercy of external circumstances or are you master of your own destiny? In order to succeed in life you need to believe that what you do is ultimately what controls your destiny.
As the famous William Shakespeare quote goes: “It is not in the stars to hold our destiny, but in ourselves.”
When we believe that we are in control of our own lives we:
- Find the motivation to work hard
- Are able to deal with challenges better
- Have less anxiety because we are in control
- Are less prone to stress and depression for the same reason
- We take control of our own lives
In comparison to this, those people who are victims will suffer from the following issues:
- They’ll suffer from anxiety, stress and depression because they believe they have no control
- They don’t bother working because “What’s the point?”
- They blame other people for everything
- They feel zero motivation
- They lose control of their own lives
Become self empowered by achieving self efficacy
Self efficacy is your belief in your self, your belief that you will be able to success eve in difficult situations. Do you believe that you will conquer even the hardest times? Then you have a high degree of self efficacy. But many people do not. Many people believe they are not equipped to cope.
You must be able to believe in yourself and your ability to succeed. We need to believe we’ll meet our targets, overcome our obstacles and achieve success.
It really does all come down to that Henry Ford quote: “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right”
